Mt. Bachelor
Mt. Bachelor, only 18 miles from Sunriver, offers both nordic and alpine skiing. The season for alpine usually extends from late November through June thanks to the Summit Lift. This mountain is a wonderful mountain for skiers of all abilities with the trail division of 30% expert, 40% intermediate, and 30% beginner. The Perfect Turn is a graduated and fun program for ski instruction. Almost 50 kilometers of groomed trails at the base of the mountain offer the nordic skier plenty of distance and awesome views.
Flowrider and Mavericks Recreation Center
The Flowrider is a continuous sheet wave ideal for some of the best body boarding and surfing you can experience indoors. That's right, the Flowrider is indoors located at the new indoor aquatic center at Mavericks in Sunriver. Along with the Flowrider the aquatic center features a 4 lane swimming pool, a kids pool with splash fountains, spa, and a 2500 sq.ft. meeting room. Reserve your next vacation with Village Properties at a Maverick's member home to experience surfing right in Sunriver.
High Desert Museum
North on Highway 97 from Sunriver Resort and just south of Bend, you will find the High Desert Museum. Open daily, the Museum displays artwork, sculpture and many exhibits showing life in the High Desert region of which Sunriver is a part. Live animal presentations feature river otters, porcupines and birds of prey, plus small and seldom seen animals which can be viewed up close in the Desertarium.
Lava Lands Visitor Center
Just 5 miles north of Village Properties on Highway 97, the center features a diorama tour depicting the volcanic forces that helped shape the region. Open daily from April through October, Lava Lands includes the Lava Cast Forest, Lava River Cave and Lava Butte, with a summit rest area and displays.
Newberry National Volcanic Monument
Head south on Highway 97 from Sunriver Resort towards LaPine and look for the signs to Newberry Crater. Within this volcano's 5 mile crater are Paulina and East Lakes, as well as Paulina Peak, campgrounds, trails and resort. In the winter, this area is accessible only by snowmobile or cross-country skis.
Smith Rock State Park
Located approximately 45 miles north of Sunriver Resort and just east of Terrebonne, this state park is nationally and internationally known as a premiere rock climbing area. There are also miles of hiking and mountain biking trails and the beauty of the park is magnified by the Crooked River which created the winding canyons. Park admission fee required and dogs must be on a leash. Open daily, except holidays, the park closes at dusk.
Crater Lake National Park
If you're interested in an all day expedition, drive south on Highway 97 to Crater Lake National Park. This incredible blue lake sits in the crater of Mount Mazama, an ancient volcano which blew its top thousands of years ago. The crater gradually filled with rainwater and snow melt, forming the lake with no natural inlet or outlet, resulting in the intense blue color of the water. In the summer months, you can take a guided boat ride out to Wizard Island or hike one of the many trails around the rim. In winter, when the park is only accessible via the east entrance, cross-country skiers and snowshoers delight in the views of the snowy lake and its surroundings. Stop in and enjoy a sumptuous meal at the recently restored historic Crater Lake Lodge. |
